Yesterday I also refined my animation more and experimented with two different ways the train could rock. The first is rotation rocking side to side and moving one translate axis to make it move side to side. The second is 2 rotation axises moving only - no translational movement. I'm not sure which one is better to animate the characters reacting to the train's rocking, (I think if I combined the two tests it would be less of a train and more of a roller coaster).
I just think whatever you choose needs to be more gentle - thought #2 looks most promising to me!
