Character Design: Week 0 - Research

Over the next ten weeks we are working on character designs and putting them in a story/scene. I was given number 1:

Person: Archer OR Knight
Conceit and Trait: Stained glass (art) and nervous.
World/Time: Medieval England
Friends Forever -  Props and Sidekicks: Horse or Weapon
Filmic Scene: Last Minute Escape
Animation Action: Using his/her weapon.

This week is research week, so below is little but enough research on the time period, the character types, the art style and about the art style being translated for animation, and some influence maps.

A Little About the time period

  • Ranges from 1066 - 1485 AD
  • Medieval came before the Tudor era.
  • Battle of Hastings 1066 - William the conquerer becomes King
  • Bayeux Tapestry is a recording of the battle through embroidery.
  • Black Death: 1348 - 1350
  • Medieval life was tough for lower classes - peasants lived in huts no windows or plumbing.

Knights

  • Knights are heavily dress in full body armour usually made of Iron and steel weapons.
  • Jousters.
  • Heavy combat and defense training - fitness levels high.
  • Education in warfare - battle strategies/plans, horsemanship.
  • Religiously pray a few times throughout the day.
  • Hunters, hawking and inspecting an estate.
  • Knights form an army and serve a Lord. Not just anyone could become a Knight, most Knights were usually nobles and young sons although you did get female Knights.
  • Knights were centered around Castle's and Manors fighting for their Lord or King during times of war.
  • Armours usually have a coat of arms to identify who they're fighting for.
  • Treated well before going to war - entertained by Jesters, music, dancing, acrobats etc.

Archers

  • Doesn't require strength.
  • Was a requirement from lower class men to be a bowman by law.
  • Skilled archer could shoot 10-12 bows per minute.
  • Their arrows could pierce a Knight's armor within in 250 yards where the arrow was released.
  • Used bow and arrow of crossbows.
  • Wore leather and boots.

Stained Glass Art

  • Stained Glass art in the early Medieval times was made by cutting and collaging pieces of coloured glass held together by lead strips and painted over, the paint and pieces would then be fired together and the overall shapes would be cut to fit its frame. It dates back very far in history across all cultures: churches, mosques, museums, galleries etc. By the mid 16th Century, coloured enamels started to be used (glass paint) it was as easy as painting a clear window.
  • This art form dates back as far as Egyptian and Roman times but in England, it was in the Medieval era it reached it’s height. Stained glass became a major pictorial form used to illustrate bible stories to a large illiterate audience in Cathedrals and Churches.
  • Gothic Stained Glass in the 1400s became more affordable for middle class and wealthy people and was seen in almost every home to illustrate their family history.
  • The stained glass aesthetic can be described as illustrated with thick, supple black lines with blocks of colour contrast, it looks radiant and delicate. These lines enable a large group of viewers to be seen from a distance.

Stained Glass Art Translated in Animation

  • Looking at Sleeping Beauty (Disney), The Sword and The Stone, The Dragon’s Lair and The Black Cauldron, I can see that the stories were probably set in Medieval era and how Stained Glass can influence an art direction. All these films share a gothic palette which is mostly dark with the odd contrasting colour, also colours are hardly shaded like in a stained glass painting.
  • Beauty and The Beast (Disney) features stained glass art at the beginning of the animation but they are more literal rather than art direction influence.
