After talking to Simon, I have figured out how I'm going to recreate my animatic in Maya, model everything so it's not 3D too much but it's not a plane either. I will put the texture in the colour node because in the bump it becomes too photo realistic. UV map will allow me to create nice penned line work. There will be little motion of the cells and chromosomes - I will do tests to see if the chromosomes look better with this texture method or the previous method Simon told me about. I could get away with rendering this in Maya Software rather than Mental ray - more tests to come...
