Perspectives: Research Dump - Carl Jung

Didn't believe in spirits and gods but believed myths grasped something the modern world has lost/forgotten. Giving spirits/gods personifications is poetic way of thinking.

Jung's ideas tend to be less discussed than those of Freud's, often because Jung's work tended to veer into the mystical and pseudoscientific (beliefs, or practices that are claimed to be scientific and factual, but have no evidence).

Shadow - part of the unconscious that contains all of the things that are unacceptable not only to society, but also to one's own personal morals and values such as envy, greed, aggression, prejudice etc. The negative part which is present in every human being.

Syzgy - gender roles/performance, made up of the anima and animus found in both conscious and unconsciousness. Anima - the feminine traits in the male image such as a display of emotion. Animus - the masculine traits in the female image such as a desire for independence a career of her own.

In any relationship between a man and a woman there are at least four personalities involved. The possible lines of communication are shown by the arrows in the diagram.

Personal Unconscious -
the part of the mind containing memories and impulses of which the individual is not aware of. Contains inherited information/structure of ones inherited world.

The Self - unification of conscious and unconscious within an individual, it is the center of a personality.

Collective Conscious - is a set of shared beliefs, ideas and moral attitudes which operate as a unifying force within society.
Persona - how we present ourselves to the world, the roles we adopt depending who we are around.

Ego - center of consciousness, but it is the self that lies at the center of personality.

Active Imagination - a way of lowering the normal threshold of consciousness so that a state similar to dreaming is achieved but one in which conscious ego-control is present.

Jung suggested that the number of existing archetypes was not static or fixed. Instead, many different archetypes may overlap or combine at any given time. The following are just a few of the various archetypes that Jung described:
  • The father: Authority figure; stern; powerful.
  • The mother: Nurturing; comforting.
  • The child: Longing for innocence; rebirth; salvation.
  • The wise old man: Guidance; knowledge; wisdom.
  • The hero: Champion; defender; rescuer.
  • The maiden: Innocence; desire; purity.
  • The trickster: Deceiver; liar; trouble-maker.

Cone of Cogency

Surrealism in Hayao Miyazaki’s films through Carl Jung’s theories of Psychoanalysis

The point I am trying to make is that Miyazaki’s films are works of surrealism as they are rooted in his conscious and subconscious.
