Sherrie Levine

Sherrie Levine is an American appropriation artist who uses mainly photography as a medium, she is best known for her pastiche reproductions of well known photographers. She makes art that celebrates doubt and uncertainty, it makes you question everything about the image, what is this replication trying to tell us about the original image. It provokes answers without giving any, it withholds meaning by including parasite meanings opening us up to interpretation encouraging us to think beyond expectations, set beliefs, ideology, and authority etc. All artists are inspired by someone they consider to be a great and they'll try to imitate/work in their style, Sherrie Levine took this idea and made it literal.

To be an artistic parasite is to insert herself into someone else's work - it's killing the avant-garde as it's not innovative or original or new, it doesn't push any boundaries but it's imitating what's already been. Levine is a postmodern artist and she fails the future by imprisoning her audience in the past. She creates art for the sake of art and uses other's art as a mask to speak through.
