5 Reasons why Funny Games US is Postmodern

  1. The film is an attack on normativity - what society standardises as normal behaviour.
  2. 2008 Funny games is an appropriation of the same film released in 1997.
  3. The film is a virus of the horror/thriller genre, it deconstructs expectations set by the genre which is denying the audience the enjoyable and entertaining film experience that people watch films for - the frustration is us being deconstructed.
  4. It also dismantles cinema expectations, such as film reality being broken when the character addresses the audience, we lose our omniscient-invisible power given to us in almost every film, making us uncomfortable and frustrated, our familiar structures and ideals are being disturbed.
  5. It is différant as in the reasoning behind the plot, the answer to ‘why is all this happening?’ is always deferred and we never know why the story is happening - again frustrating because in storytelling the audience need to be told enough to understand the story otherwise they won’t watch again our expectations of storytelling have been dismantled.
