Script to Screen Reflective Statement

This project has been the hardest one yet, it has challenged everything I thought I knew about character design. Before this course the only experience I had with character design was manga and that book didn't talk about using shapes to design a character or anything else Justin's taught us. It was just drawing people so at the beginning of this project that was inevitably going to be the first thing I drew; generic people and manga heads. I spent most of this project trying to get character right which took me an infuriatingly long time for something to click in my head. I think I'm getting there with finding a character style, I don't think I'm there just yet. Where as environment concept art is still a massive struggle and I find that infuriating and it's infuriating that nothing is clicking and worst yet I don't have my own style, I'm just manipulating whatever I can to get by and it's doing me no favours its only pushing me back steps when I'm rushing to get forward. I agree that I am in my own little work bubble that I don't look up or revise what I'm doing so when the next project starts I'm going to re-read this post.

Next project whatever it may be...

  • Don't rush and don't panic.
  • Plan and prepare what I'm going to create: do research and do composition thumbnails with different horizon lines and angles - they don't take long and are so beneficial.
  • When I create a piece revise it and get feedback then go back to it if need be.
  • Finding an art style, let the next project work itself out for me and continue working hard in classes and taking on board feedback - I will get there.
I understand now that in animation everything has to be in the same style to look like its in the same world, like you wouldn't find a looney tune in a disney film's world and its the style that made crossover shows so special and amazing for me like the Fairly Odd Parents and Jimmy Neutron crossover.

Putting the bad aside I'm pleased with the final characters - the pain was worth it, the environments - no. I think I had good use of camera shots and they helped tell my story well, writing film reviews is what made that click in my head. In third year, I think I'll pass on taking this story all the way...
I'm proud that all the sounds used except the 5 seconds at the end are my own that I've recorded and not just took off the internet. I think my animatic is good considering it's my first time, and the pre viz I am happy with, as for storyboarding next time I'll go straight for digital rather than pencil. My art of next time I will brand rather than use a keynote template.
